The current “core Strategy” that sets out the planning strategy for the district was adopted five years ago and the Council is now starting the process of reviewing this important document. There have been many changes to national planning policy over the last five years and a focus on delivering more homes to meet the growing demands for housing across the country.
As a first step in preparing the new local plan, Sedgemoor District Council will publish a consultation document. This was agreed by the Executive today (September 16th) and is it recommended to be discussed by Full Council on the 7th October. It is proposed that this stage of the consultation will start on 26th October.
The document sets out options for new housing and growth targets and seeks views on what might be the appropriate levels. There is also a review of the role of the various towns and villages in the district and suggestion as to what development might be suitable. There is greater emphasis on providing opportunities for new development in the rural areas in order to support and sustain these places.
The document also sets out the various site options at Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Cheddar and a number of the larger villages. No decisions have been made as to which sites might be required and views are sought on both the suggested sites and whether there are other opportunities that should be considered. It is likely that a number of large greenfield sites will be needed to deliver the homes and jobs needed in the district as well as the necessary supporting infrastructure such as new schools, roads and flood defences.
The intention is to start the public consultation on the 26th October and run this up to the 18th December. There will be a range of meetings, workshops and exhibitions to support the consultation, as well as an opportunity to comment online. Further details of the events will be published in early October.
This is an opportunity to get involved and help shape the future of the district - views from everyone are important. All comments will be taken into consideration and will help the preparation of a draft local plan that will hopefully be published for further consultation next Summer.
